Security personnel from the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have significantly increased their presence around the Rainbow Event Centre in Abuja, the venue for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention.

Around 3,000 delegates are anticipated to participate in the process of electing the party's National Working Committee (NWC), which will be responsible for the party's direction over the next four years.

Reports indicate that law enforcement officers were conducting thorough security screenings of all delegates before granting them entry into the event venue. Additionally, patrol vehicles manned by security operatives were positioned at various strategic points to ensure overall safety and order.

Journalists covering the event also underwent stringent security checks to gain access.

The ADC has reportedly been experiencing internal leadership disputes, with different factions claiming authority.

Following a ruling by the Court of Appeal and ongoing legal challenges concerning the party's leadership, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reportedly suspended its recognition of any leadership factions within the ADC.

Speaking at the convention grounds, Senator Dino Melaye stated that the convention would proceed as scheduled, despite reported attempts to disrupt the proceedings.

"Yesterday, there were concerted efforts to prevent us from holding this convention. We were denied all the venues we applied for," Melaye stated.

He further added, "As late as 11 p.m. last night, the owners of this venue tried to cancel the program, but we stood our ground, and we will continue with the convention today."

Mr. Kabiru Saje, a member of the New Media committee, commented that the convention was expected to either establish new leadership for the party or confirm the existing one.

"Despite attempts by authorities to halt the program yesterday evening, we remained firm because holding this convention is our right," Saje remarked.

He explained that while the party faced obstacles in securing a venue, requiring several changes, preparations are now complete, and the event is set to proceed.

"The convention is scheduled to commence by 11 a.m., and the mood is positive, with delegates arriving and all arrangements finalized," he stated.

Saje expressed the party's confidence in its current leadership, describing them as experienced, strategic, and dedicated to advancing the party's goals.
