The All Progressives Congress (APC) has addressed recent political realignments among opposition figures, particularly those aligning under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The ruling party characterized these groups as disorganized and incapable of mounting a significant electoral challenge in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
During a media briefing on Wednesday, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda stated that coalitions formed by individuals, rather than established political parties, lack genuine political standing. He emphasized that a true coalition requires the convergence of political parties, not just individuals.
The APC also conveyed considerable optimism regarding its electoral performance in the upcoming election cycle. The party specifically pointed to the North-West region as a key stronghold where it anticipates a dominant showing.
Mr. Yilwatda asserted that recent political defections and strategic realignments have reinforced the APC's position in crucial swing states within the region. He noted that many of the political structures that were instrumental in delivering votes for the party in the 2023 elections have either been maintained or have rejoined the APC, thereby enhancing the party's prospects.
Regarding specific states, the APC chairman mentioned that in Kano, the party is confident of securing victory. He further elaborated that in Kaduna, the APC has reportedly made significant gains in areas previously considered opposition strongholds. "Southern Kaduna that used to go against us, they’ve all returned to APC," he stated.
In Sokoto, the APC now holds sway in three out of the four major political blocs, according to Mr. Yilwatda. He also indicated that in Katsina, key political figures are now aligned with the ruling party. "Zamfara was having four blocks. All those four blocks have collapsed into APC," he added.
Mr. Yilwatda concluded that the party's established influence in these swing states provides a clear advantage in the North-West. "Even if I have three out of the remaining states, I’ve won the North-west," he remarked. "We are good to go in the North-west when it comes to numbers."
Echoing similar sentiments, APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru emphasized that electoral results are the ultimate determinant of political strength. He pointed out that the activities of the ADC have not yielded any tangible electoral victories in recent elections.
"The other people (ADC) did not win anything… even win a single seat, whatever party they call themselves, coalition of confusion," Mr. Basiru commented. He further suggested that internal disputes and individual ambitions continue to undermine opposition unity, stressing that individuals cannot replicate the role of established party structures in forging a viable coalition.
