Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has announced the disbursement of N50 million in loans to support widows of fallen heroes in the area, with the goal of improving their economic situation.
The checks were formally presented to the beneficiaries at the Cenotaph located in Alagbaka, Akure, during the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Aiyedatiwa explained that the initiative is designed to assist widows who have assumed the role of primary earners for their families following the loss of their husbands.
Under the micro-credit loan program, each qualified recipient will receive between N450,000 and N500,000, with no interest charged on these loans.
Additionally, the governor shared that he has personally contributed to the emblem appeal fund, which has been initiated with a starting amount of N5 million. He affirmed, “We have integrated the disbursement of interest-free loans into this annual celebration in Ondo State, and we will maintain this tradition this year. This unique Micro-Credit Loan Scheme for the widows of deceased heroes, offered at a zero interest rate, will continue regardless of the prevailing economic conditions.”
“This is our modest effort to assist in their businesses, enabling them to support the families left behind by their breadwinners. A significant number of widows will benefit from this year's initiative, as it is an ongoing process capable of accommodating more participants.
“This year, a total of N50 million has been approved and allocated, allowing us to assist more individuals than last year. The loan amount has been increased from N200,000 to between N450,000 and N500,000 for each beneficiary.
“We urge the recipients to collaborate with the State Government to ensure the sustainability of the program by prioritizing the repayment of their loans.
“Our aim is to consistently bring joy to the faces of the widows and dependents of the fallen heroes. Therefore, we ask for your cooperation and prompt loan repayment to realize this goal.”
Aiyedatiwa expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders, both military and civilian, for their roles in the success of the 2026 celebration. He also commended security forces, including the Amotekun Corps, for their efforts in maintaining safety within the state.
He remarked that Ondo has been acknowledged as one of Nigeria's safest and most tranquil states and assured that his administration would continue to support law enforcement agencies within its available resources.
Dr. Seun Osamaye, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, speaking on behalf of the government, reaffirmed the state's commitment to aiding the widows of fallen heroes, ensuring them of ongoing assistance and empowerment.
