Amazon plans to integrate artificial intelligence into its filmmaking and television production processes, as reported by Reuters. This initiative is met with apprehension in Hollywood, where there are concerns that AI could disrupt the industry and lead to job losses.

Leading the charge is industry veteran Albert Cheng, who heads a team at Amazon MGM Studio focused on creating innovative AI tools designed to reduce expenses and enhance the creative workflow. The company intends to roll out a closed beta program in March, welcoming industry collaborators to evaluate these tools, with anticipated results arriving by May.

The AI Studio, according to Reuters, is structured similarly to a startup, following Amazon founder Jeff Bezos's “two pizza team” methodology, which emphasizes keeping teams small. The group consists mainly of engineers and scientists, alongside a limited number of creative and business professionals.

Cheng expressed to Reuters that while AI will expedite various production processes, it will not substitute human creativity. Essential roles such as writers, directors, actors, and character designers will continue to play a pivotal part throughout the production stages, utilizing AI as a resource to enhance their creative output.

The report also indicates that the AI Studio is crafting tools aimed at improving character consistency, ensuring compatibility with standard industry creative software, and bridging the gap between current consumer AI solutions and the precise control needed by filmmakers.

Amazon's strategy involves leveraging its cloud computing sector, Amazon Web Services, while also seeking partnerships with various large language model providers to offer creators enhanced options for both pre- and post-production tasks. A key focus of the initiative is to safeguard intellectual property and prevent the migration of AI-generated content into other models.

Producers such as Robert Stromberg (known for Maleficent), Kunal Nayyar (from The Big Bang Theory), and former Pixar and ILM animator Colin Brady are reportedly collaborating with the AI Studio. The successful series House of David is highlighted as one of the initial ventures showcasing the benefits of AI-assisted production.
