The Iranian government has confirmed that Nigerian nationals residing in Iran are secure, despite the escalating hostilities in the Middle East due to the ongoing military standoff involving the US and Israel.

During a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, Ambassador Mahdavi Raja provided this assurance in light of recent events affecting the region.

He highlighted that since the outbreak of conflicts, no incidents of violence or harm have been reported against Nigerians living in major Iranian cities, such as Tehran and Qom.

Raja underscored that Iran's military actions have been purely defensive, aiming to safeguard its sovereignty and population, in accordance with international law.

"Ensuring the safety of foreign residents, including Nigerians, is a top priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran," he stated.

The ambassador reiterated that Iran's military operations are specifically directed at military targets and do not pose a threat to the civilian population or foreign nationals residing in the country.

He reaffirmed Iran's commitment to maintaining diplomatic relations and fostering dialogue while simultaneously upholding its sovereignty.

The ambassador remarked that Iran’s military response is guided by international legal standards, particularly referencing the right to self- defense as enshrined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

Raja noted the timing of the conflict coincides with significant cultural and religious events in Iran, including the holy month of Ramadan and the Iranian New Year, Nowruz.

Despite the complexities of the situation, he asserted that the safety and welfare of foreign residents, including Nigerians, have not been adversely impacted.

He also pointed out that Iran has long-standing diplomatic and economic relations with Nigeria, emphasizing ongoing cooperation in sectors such as energy, agriculture, education, and trade.

The ambassador called on Nigerians living abroad to remain composed and adhere to official advice, clarifying there is no immediate danger to their safety.

Furthermore, he urged the international community to foster peace and stability in the region, recognizing Iran’s inherent rights to protect its citizens and territory.

This reassurance comes as the Nigerian government monitors the situation closely, having issued travel advisories for citizens in Iran and nearby Gulf states.

Additionally, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) confirmed that it is working with relevant agencies to support Nigerian citizens living in that region. (NAN)
