The Anambra State House of Assembly has announced plans to potentially lift the suspension on Hon. Bernard Udemezue, who represents the Ayamelum State Constituency.
Udemezue was suspended in August 2025 after allegations surfaced that he revealed sensitive information about the internal functions of the Assembly via social media, including the allowances and compensations received by its members.
In defense of his actions, Udemezue claimed that he intended to maintain an open-door policy with his constituents, which included being transparent about his earnings while in office.
Initially suspended for a period of six months, he faced further setbacks in resuming his duties even after this initial suspension ended. An additional three-month sanction was imposed on him due to allegations of not adhering to established protocols, which included failing to submit an apology to the Assembly.
During the Assembly's session on Wednesday, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, instructed the House Committee on Rules, Ethics and Privileges to conduct a thorough review of the suspension.
The committee, led by the Majority Leader, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, has been directed to prioritize this examination and provide a report at the next scheduled session.
Udeze noted that the decision regarding the potential lifting of the suspension will depend on the outcomes of the committee's assessment, particularly concerning how well Udemezue adhered to the conditions of his suspension.
The recommendations from the committee are expected to be presented for consideration at the upcoming plenary.
Udemezue's suspension is set to conclude on February 26, 2026.
