Chukwuma Soludo has officially declared that the extended sit-at-home directive in Anambra State has come to an end, citing enhanced security measures in the area.
This announcement was made on Tuesday, March 17, at his second term inauguration held at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka. The event featured several notable attendees, including former presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo, along with Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Soludo declared, “The crippling sit-at-home is now over; our schools, markets, businesses, and public service personnel are back to operational status. The people of Anambra assert that we are now one of the safest, if not the safest, states in Nigeria.” He noted that activities resumed across the state on Mondays, stating, “I am certain many of you arrived in Anambra yesterday, on a Monday, which previously was not feasible.”
The sit-at-home order, which enforced a lockdown on Mondays and prohibited economic activities, was initially prompted by protests regarding the detention of Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal Government. Soludo emphasized the progress made in addressing insecurity, stating, “We have dismantled 62 criminal hideouts, and eight local government areas that were previously under siege have been liberated.”
He highlighted the surge in economic and social activities by saying, “Anambra experienced its most prosperous Christmas last December, with a record influx of visitors—over 10,000 people daily arriving in the Solution City until January 10.” The governor attributed these improvements to the enactment of the Homeland Security Law 2025, which has been instrumental in lowering crime rates.
In his remarks, he also addressed the troubling trend among youth seeking wealth without effort, which he associated with an increase in criminal behavior. Soludo noted that initiatives under the “Oso Soludo” campaign have led to intensified enforcement against such activities.
He remarked, “Hundreds of these dangerous native doctors are fleeing. The prominent figure associated with this new trend, Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, has admitted guilt and received a prison sentence. His large shrine has also been demolished.”
The governor reiterated that his administration is determined to uphold ethical values and confront challenges such as drug abuse, cultism, and crime. “We are undertaking a serious campaign for an ethical and cultural revival… This is essential to reclaim our youth and secure a brighter future free from drugs, cultism, magic, and criminality,” he stated.
