Dr. Ahmadu Aliyu Oga Onawo, a Royal Father and passionate basketball supporter, has been recognized by notable basketball promoter Mr. Igoche Mark for his initiative in convening a stakeholders’ meeting with the goal of uniting the basketball community in Nigeria.
The meeting, which took place at the Andoma's palace in Doma, saw the participation of vital stakeholders both in person and online, coming together to deliberate on strategies to protect the future of basketball in the country.
During the meeting, the Andoma of Doma encouraged participants to set aside their differences and collaborate for the advancement of Nigerian basketball.
This call for unity comes in light of a potential crisis stemming from proposals to extend the tenure of the current board managing the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
“The institution has not been safeguarded. It is crucial that we take steps to ensure its protection. Each of us should strive to defend the NBBF. We must look for investments that can elevate the sport,” he asserted.
He added, “Our differing opinions should not lead to our downfall; we need to utilize wisdom, and through that, the growth we seek will materialize.”
Mr. Igoche Mark praised the royal initiative, advocating for similar gatherings in the future and emphasizing the necessity for stakeholders to put aside past grievances and focus on reconciliation.
“I truly commend you, our Royal Father, for taking the time to call us for this peace meeting, despite your demanding schedule.
“We constitute a large family bound by basketball, and your initiative is pivotal for our advancement. To progress together, it is essential that we let go of past issues and forgive each other’s mistakes,” Mark stated.
Additionally, Olumide Oyedeji, the South West representative on the NBBF Board and a former captain of D’Tigers, urged all stakeholders to adopt a greater sense of accountability, cautioning against character attacks and detrimental campaigns against one another.
