Gyang James, a 17-year-old recent graduate of Victory Academy High School in Jos, achieved a remarkable second-place finish at the recently concluded Yenagoa City International 10 Kilometer Marathon, securing a substantial $3,000 cash prize.
Ethiopia's Habtamu Birhane Molla made history by winning the inaugural edition of the race, crossing the finish line in 29 minutes and 23 seconds to claim the top prize of $5,000. The young Nigerian talent, Gyang, followed closely with a time of 29 minutes and 59 seconds. Another Nigerian competitor, Francis James, secured the third position with a time of 30 minutes and 16 seconds, earning $2,000.
In the women's division, athletes from Ethiopia secured all the top positions. Shewaye Tolosa, Tigist Girma Arseta, and Worke Gacasho Jilo took home the first, second, and third prizes respectively.
A Nigerian participant, Daylop Patience, secured the fourth position, while her compatriot Vivian Nenyitwe Obadiaha finished in fifth place.
Meanwhile, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State affirmed his administration's commitment to continued investment in sports development. He stated that this focus aims to provide young people with opportunities to realize their full potential.
Represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, Governor Diri emphasized the significant health benefits derived from sports and physical fitness for all citizens.
Governor Diri reiterated that his administration will continue to prioritize sports, recognizing its role in establishing viable career paths for athletes and enabling them to achieve global recognition.
