The second edition of the Andrew Eigbedion Annual Sports Festival, organised for medical students at the College of Medicine, Ambrose Alli University (AAU), has wrapped up following an eventful nine-day period of competitive sports. The festival saw significant participation from students and attracted attention from the host medical community.
The competition, which commenced on February 6, included male and female football tournaments, as well as indoor games like chess, table tennis, snooker, checkers, ludo, and ayo. Volleyball, badminton, and scrabble were also integral parts of the packed schedule.
The festival's climax featured a closely fought male football final between the MED 2016 and MED 2017 sets. Ultimately, the MED 2017 team secured a 3-1 victory over their senior opponents after a dynamic 90-minute match.
In the women's football category, Team Hepzibah, led by AAUMSA Vice President Esther Aima, emerged as champions, marking a successful campaign for the team.
Individual awards were presented across several disciplines. Vifa Isaac Arojie, known as Afiv, was recognised as the Coach of the Tournament. Ihator Augustine received accolades for Most Valuable Player and Top Goal Scorer in the male football event, while Timothy Egumah was named Best Defender and Theophilus Iremiren Best Goalkeeper. Goodluck Arome was also acknowledged as the Top Assist provider.
The male volleyball title went to Team D’Brand, with Eguolor Kpolugbo receiving recognition as the Highest Pointer. Team Colpher claimed the female volleyball championship, and Team D’Brand also triumphed in the mixed volleyball category.
Badminton competitions saw Osaze Ogienhor win the male event and Itepu Eseosa Martha win the female event. In table tennis, Ehiremen Izekor secured the male title, and Nelly Okoh won the female event.
Pentecost Okoro and Ugbeva Precious were awarded the Dr Andrew Eigbedion Sports Male and Female Enthusiast accolades, respectively.
In the indoor games segment, Victory Imuzai and Divine Enoghase clinched the male and female scrabble championships. Tosin Famurewa and Ese Oseimelu were victorious in chess, while Williams Paul Omoh and Azeke Itohan Priscillia won the male and female ludo tournaments. Precious Ugbeva was the champion in the female ayo event. Ihator Augustine added the male checkers title to his awards, and Timothy Egumah emerged as the winner of the snooker competition.
Ambrose Ogbue was honoured as the Best Football Referee and recommended for a FIFA badge, having officiated both the male and female finals.
Addressing the attendees at the closing ceremony, Andrew Eigbedion, the festival's sponsor and Staff Adviser to AAUMSA, expressed his delight at the high level of student participation and the engagement from the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) community, which included residents and staff who closely followed the events.
Mr. Eigbedion extended his appreciation to Professor Reuben Agbons Eifediyi, the Chief Medical Director and CEO of ISTH, for providing access to the Sports Field and Conference Hall for the festival's activities. He also commended the AAUMSA President, David Ohiwerei (D’Brand), and his executive team for their effective leadership, and specifically praised the Director of Sports, Daniel Omoruyi, for the successful organisation of the festival.
The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Associate Professor Wilson Ovienria, former Chairperson of the Medical Advisory Committee at ISTH; Dr. Cyril Obasuyi, Consultant Ophthalmologist; Dr. Cyril Erameh, Consultant Neurologist and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at AAU; Dr. Bruno Arekhandia, Consultant Neurosurgeon; Dr. Philip Irabor, President of the Association of Resident Doctors at ISTH; and Dr. Kerry Azeke, Specialist General Surgeon.
These dignitaries, along with other notable figures, presented medals to the top individual and team performers. The festival concluded with a shared sense of accomplishment among students and spectators, reinforcing its role as a vital unifying event for medical students at AAU and the broader medical community in Irrua.
