Manchester City's captain, Bernardo Silva, is preparing to leave the English club at the end of the ongoing season. The Portuguese international, aged 31, will depart when his contract expires, concluding a nine-season tenure marked by significant achievements, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph.
Assistant manager Pep Lijnders, speaking in a press conference following City's 4-0 FA Cup victory over Liverpool on Saturday, confirmed the impending departure. He stated that "every good story comes to an end" and acknowledged the immense challenge of replacing a player of Silva's calibre, describing him as unique and irreplaceable.
Lijnders, who was deputising for manager Pep Guardiola due to a touchline suspension, elaborated on Silva's singular qualities. He highlighted the player's exceptional ability to control matches, his movement on the field, how he receives the ball, his leadership, and his knack for finding tactical solutions.
The assistant manager stressed that the club does not typically seek a direct replacement for a player with Silva's specific attributes. Instead, the focus shifts to identifying players who can complement the team's evolution and secure a place in the starting lineup.
Lijnders also expressed optimism regarding the club's academy prospects and recently acquired young talent, anticipating that they may be ready to step up to fill the void in midfield positions. He noted the importance of these young players making the transition and continuing their development.
He further emphasised the value of retaining experienced players, stating, "the most important is that the seniors will stay for a long time, that they stay, that the core is there and around that you can move."
The difficulty of replacing Silva was underscored, with Lijnders suggesting his absence will be acutely felt. "And that's one game. Imagine a season?"
Concluding his remarks, Lijnders stated, "But every good story comes to an end. I hope he enjoys the last months, it is only six weeks, and he has a good farewell and he deserves all that attention as well."
Silva joined Manchester City from Monaco in 2017 and has so far amassed 450 appearances for the club.
