The All Progressives Congress (APC) held its 8th National Convention on Friday, where a six-month extension for the Caretaker Committee Executives in Ekiti and Osun states was confirmed.

This resolution, approved by the National Convention, which serves as the party's highest governing body, is intended to maintain administrative continuity and stability ahead of the impending gubernatorial elections in these states.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin moved the motion for this extension, highlighting that the tenure of the current caretaker committees at the ward, local, and state levels is set to expire at the end of March 2026. He emphasized that the current political climate is not optimal for conducting new congresses.

Jibrin stated, “It is in the best interest of the party to extend the tenures of the mentioned caretaker committees, allowing for better coordination, consolidation, and preparation for congresses.”

The motion received a second from Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and the delegates formally endorsed it during the convention.

Additionally, the convention saw the official dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) to facilitate the election of new national officers. This motion was presented by National Legal Adviser Abdulkarim Kana, supported by Deputy National Secretary Abdulkarim Oluopolekana, referencing Article 13.1 of the party's constitution.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, also put forth a motion advocating for consensus as the preferred means of electing new national officers, believing it would properly reflect the party's collective wishes.

This motion was corroborated by Uba Sani, the Governor of Kaduna State and Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum. Moreover, Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved for the endorsement and ratification of the ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses conducted nationwide.

Akpabio assured that these processes aligned closely with the stipulations of the Electoral Act and the party's guidelines, thereby bolstering the grassroots structure of the APC. All motions presented were unanimously accepted by the convention delegates after being put to a vote by the Chairman of the Convention Central Planning Committee, Aminu Masari.
