Maureen Chinwe Gwacham, the representative for Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency, has provided an explanation for a video that gained traction online, showing her seconding a motion on the floor of the House without being able to articulate its purpose. This clip drew criticism and raised questions about legislative preparedness.
Gwacham, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, stated in a released statement that she felt she was "caught off guard" during the legislative session. She explained that she had just settled into her seat when the Speaker requested her to second the motion, without any prior briefing.
She further clarified that the motion was introduced by Muktar Tolani Shagaya and specifically addressed the pressing need to install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public facilities to help prevent deaths that could otherwise be avoided.
Gwacham indicated that her decision to support the motion by seconding it was based on her confidence in the credibility of the sponsor, rather than having prior detailed knowledge of the motion's contents.
In response to the public reaction, she expressed gratitude to her constituents for their concern and reiterated her dedication to her legislative responsibilities and representing her constituency.
