An Indian national was taken hostage, and a police official was killed during an assault by armed bandits at an agricultural operation in Ogunmakin Village, located in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident transpired on January 16, 2026, around 1:00 p.m. at the Aqua Triton Company, where a group of around ten armed bandits attacked the farm.
"The kidnappers took Renjith Pillai, a 42-year-old farm director, while he was checking the crops," reported a source to the security expert, Zagazola Makama.
According to the source, there were four Police Mobile Force (PMF) officers stationed at the facility.
Insp. Imoobe Prester, one of the officers on duty, confronted the abductors, trying to thwart the kidnapping effort by engaging them in a shootout.
"During the confrontation, the assailants shot Insp. Imoobe and escaped into the nearby bush with his AK-47 after taking the expatriate prisoner," the source disclosed.
"The officer was promptly taken for medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries later on," the source added.
A coordinated response team that included police officers from Idi-Ayure Division, personnel from the PMF, the command's anti-kidnapping unit, along with local hunters and security volunteers, was dispatched to search the area for the attackers and recover the stolen weapon.
The source indicated that information gathered from villagers and farm workers is aiding in the pursuit of the culprits.
The deceased officer's body has been sent to the Adeoyo Hospital morgue on Ring Road, Ibadan, for preservation and autopsy procedures.
Investigations into this alarming incident are ongoing.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in securing the release of the abducted individual and in capturing those responsible for this crime.
