A teenager has been detained on charges of arson following a significant fire that ravaged the historic Big Mill located in Leek, Staffordshire. Law enforcement officials have reported that an 18-year-old local male is in custody on the grounds of reckless arson threatening lives.
The fire erupted around 9:22 PM at the six-storey, Grade II-listed structure on Mill Street, which necessitated emergency evacuations due to the rapid spread of flames throughout the building. Crews from the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service worked through the night into Saturday to get the fire under control.
Station Manager Jonathan Ashby stated, “While the fire is being managed, it has not been fully extinguished yet as firefighters are currently unable to access the premises. A significant cordon remains in effect, and we anticipate our presence in the area will continue as we work towards a safe and swift resolution.”
Drone footage revealed the intensity of the fire, showing flames engulfing the building with parts of it collapsing amid the firefighting efforts. Numerous emergency units, along with an aerial ladder platform, were dispatched to the scene. Surrounding roads, including the A523 Mill Street, have been closed, and the public is being advised to steer clear of the vicinity.
Constructed in 1857, the Big Mill was a significant historical site that once operated as a prominent silk manufacturing facility employing thousands. Although the building had been vacant, it was approved for redevelopment into residential housing.
Local residents described the incident as terrifying. One witness recounted, “I can't believe I stumbled upon it so early; I was shaking uncontrollably, it was horrific! The noise was dreadful!”
Authorities are urging anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
