Quadri Aruna, a prominent figure in African table tennis, is set to face a formidable challenge as he leads the continent in the 2026 ITTF World Cup scheduled in Macao, China, from March 30 to April 5.

This edition of the competition is particularly significant as the International Table Tennis Federation celebrates its 100th anniversary, with 48 male and 48 female players competing for the coveted Evans and Hammarlund Cups. The level of competition is unprecedented this year.

Aruna, who made history in 2014 by becoming the first African to reach the World Cup quarterfinals in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he was also honored with the ITTF World Player of the Year accolade, is drawn in Group 6. He will kick off his campaign against Croatia's Tomislav Pucar on March 30.

Other African competitors are also up against intense opposition. Egyptian star Omar Assar finds himself in Group 5, alongside Algeria's Mehdi Bouloussa and Chinese Taipei's Lin Jun-Yu. Meanwhile, Algeria's Stephane Ouaiche will make his debut in Group 15 against France's Simon Gauzy and China's Wen Ruibo.

In the women's category, Africa's Hana Goda will strive to exceed her last-16 performance from 2025, facing tough competitors like Chinese Taipei's Cheng I-Ching and Macao's Leong On Na in Group 14.

Former champion Dina Meshref is set for a tough battle as she competes against the world’s top-ranked player, Sun Yingsha of China, and Lin Yu-Jhun of Chinese Taipei in Group 1.

Additionally, Mariam Alhodaby from Egypt will compete against Germany's Sabine Winter and Wales’ Anna Hursey in Group 12, while Algerian teenager Tania Morice will enter her first World Cup match against Brazil's Bruna Takahashi and Romania's Bernadette Szocs in Group 16.

For the 2026 tournament, the Stage 1 group matches will be conducted as best- of-five games, marking this change as potentially pivotal with little margin for mistakes. Only group winners will progress to the knockout stages, indicating a week filled with tight and thrilling matches ahead.
