Atletico Madrid has secured their place in the Champions League semi-finals, having managed to overcome Barcelona on aggregate despite a fierce challenge from the Catalan club.
Barcelona, who were trailing 2-0 from the first leg, started the return match with significant urgency. Lamine Yamal netted an early goal within five minutes, capitalizing on a defensive error by Clement Lenglet to beat goalkeeper Juan Musso. The momentum shifted again nineteen minutes later when Ferran Torres scored, finding the top corner with a well-placed left-footed shot after receiving a pass from Dani Olmo, thus bringing the aggregate score level.
Atletico Madrid swiftly responded to regain the lead in the tie. Marcos Llorente made a decisive run down the right flank and provided the assist for Ademola Lookman, who scored to silence the home crowd and restore Atletico's advantage on aggregate.
During the match, Barcelona had opportunities to take full control. Juan Musso made a critical save to deny Fermin Lopez from close range, and further drama ensued when Torres had a goal disallowed for offside after a review by VAR early in the second half.
The game took a significant turn when Barcelona were reduced to ten men. Eric Garcia was shown a yellow card for bringing down Alexander Sorloth as the Atletico forward was making a run in behind the defence.
Despite sustained late pressure from Barcelona, including headers from Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo, they were unable to find the decisive goal required to complete their comeback.
Atletico Madrid will now compete in the semi-finals, awaiting the outcome of a tie between Arsenal and Sporting CP. They are aiming to reach their first Champions League final since 2016.
