Azerbaijan's government has initiated the evacuation of its diplomatic staff from its embassy in Tehran and the consulate general in Tabriz due to mounting security concerns. The announcement was made by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov during a press briefing in Baku.

This decision follows an incident involving a drone that allegedly breached Azerbaijan's territory near the Nakhchivan exclave, resulting in injuries to four individuals. Bayramov stated that the action was taken on the directive of President Ilham Aliyev, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of Azerbaijani personnel abroad.

In his remarks, Bayramov declared, "On the orders of President Ilham Aliyev, instructions have been given to evacuate our embassy in Tehran and the consulate general in Tabriz from Iran, and these instructions are already being implemented. We cannot put the lives of our people at risk."

The recent escalation followed claims from Azerbaijan that four Iranian drones had crossed into its Nakhchivan exclave, leading to injuries. Azerbaijan's leadership has responded vigorously, condemning the event, while Iran has denied any involvement in the drone incursions.

President Aliyev has indicated that Azerbaijan may consider retaliation in reaction to what it regards as violations of its sovereignty. Historical relations between Azerbaijan and Iran have been fraught with tension, largely exacerbated by Azerbaijan's alliance with Israel, which has drawn criticism from Iran.

Despite both countries being home to a majority Shi’ite Muslim population, Azerbaijan has adopted a secular governmental framework and frequently finds itself in conflict with Iran over issues of regional influence and security.
