The Barewa Old Boys Association (BOBA) has advocated for the resurgence of Nigeria’s founding principles of discipline, integrity, and bravery in leadership, inspired by the lasting impact of the late Head of State, Murtala Muhammed.

During the unveiling of the book "Murtala Muhammed: Unveiling the Ancestral Roots of a Nigerian General" held at a notable venue, the President of BOBA, represented by (FCA, FCCA, Sarkin Shanun Kano), described the occasion as both an institutional honor and a national duty to commemorate a life dedicated to service.

He stated, "Fifty years after his death, Murtala's legacy still resonates with a sense of urgency, bravery, and patriotism. Before he commanded armed forces, he commanded respect from colleagues. His self-leadership came before he took on a national leadership role."

The Association traced the foundations of Murtala’s leadership to his early education at a prestigious institution where he entered in 1952. This college, renowned for its stringent discipline and leadership fostering, was crucial in instilling in him the values of responsibility, courage, and excellence that later characterized his service to the nation.

He highlighted three essential lessons drawn from Murtala’s life: that the journey of leadership starts in youth, that discipline is fundamental to greatness, and that courage is a principled choice before evolving into public actions.

He also reminded Nigerians of Murtala's significant remarks: "Nigeria will not tolerate indiscipline" and "Africa has come of age," which reflect beliefs shaped long before he attained power.

"The narrative of Murtala Muhammed transcends military history; it is a story of education. It highlights the importance of institutions and the pivotal role that character development in youth plays in determining adult destinies," he affirmed.

BOBA reiterated its dedication to enhancing educational institutions and mentoring young Nigerians in values-driven leadership, asserting that such initiatives would be the most fitting tribute to Murtala Muhammed's legacy.

The Association called upon public servants and institutions to reinstate discipline and a sense of urgency in national duties, emphasizing that Murtala’s brief tenure serves as a benchmark for courageous, people-centered governance.

The solemn gathering attracted academics, government representatives, military officials, and members of the Barewa community.
