The political dynamics in Nigeria may be shifting as Bala Mohammed, the current governor of Bauchi State and chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, is reportedly making arrangements to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) within the week. This potential defection has sparked disappointment among members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), particularly in Governor Seyi Makinde’s faction.

Sources indicate that discussions concerning the terms of his defection were ongoing as of last night. There are reports that he has been promised a senatorial nomination alongside the standard benefits allocated to other governors who transitioned to the ruling party.

During a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu and APC officials, Mohammed expressed his desire to integrate into the APC political family. Insightful details reveal that the governor's motivation for the defection might be influenced by the legal issues surrounding his finance commissioner, Yakubu Adamu, who is currently embroiled in terrorism and money laundering allegations linked to N4.6 billion. Adamu purportedly threatened to implicate the governor if he remained detained.

Reports also suggest that stringent requirements were placed on Mohammed by the APC that differ from the arrangements facilitated for others who have defected previously. Disappointment is palpable among members of Governor Makinde's camp, with many questioning how a leader who once represented PDP governors could betray his party loyalty at such a critical time.

Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi State

According to insiders, during the discussions regarding his defection, President Tinubu explicitly stated the challenges in granting him control over the APC structure in Bauchi, which had been afforded to earlier defectors. He explained that the best offer would be a return to the Senate, without the allowance to nominate his successor.

This presents a notable restriction for Mohammed, as other governors who joined the APC previously received more favorable terms. The president communicated that despite his ambitions, the conditions under which he may transition to the APC are considerably more limited.

Additionally, it has come to light that the governor may be required to apologize to Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, due to a past incident in which Mohammed's son criticized him for distributing aid during Ramadan in Bauchi. This unprecedented demand emphasizes the complexity of his potential alignment with the APC.

It has been reported that the governor has conveyed his willingness to extend an apology, although he has displayed discomfort with several conditions including the need to relinquish his influence regarding succession, a vital aspect he deems critical to his legacy.

In an attempt to remedy the situation, he has approached the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, to negotiate a more favorable 60/40 party structure-sharing configuration in Bauchi.

While the success of these negotiations remains unconfirmed, it is known that he convened a stakeholders’ assembly this week, possibly in hopes of securing concessions from President Tinubu.

This unfolding situation has raised tensions among the PDP loyalists in Makinde's camp, who view Mohammed's last-minute decision to defect as a significant betrayal of their collective effort to restore the party's fortunes. Concerns have been voiced regarding the future viability of democracy if parties are unable to maintain their leadership.

Should Bala Mohammed officially defect to the APC, it will bolster the ruling party’s representation to 32 governors. In comparison, the PDP currently maintains representation with Governor Seyi Makinde while the Labour Party has Alex Otti as its governor, alongside governing figures from the All Progressives Grand Alliance and Accord Party.
