Renowned Nigerian musician Beautiful Nubia has made serious allegations against fellow artist Yinka Ayefele and another musician known as BBO, accusing them of copyright infringement.
In a post on social media platform X, Beautiful Nubia asserted that both musicians have replicated the melody of his original song titled "Seven Lifes."
He specifically mentioned that Ayefele's track from 2012, "My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti)," and BBO's recent song "Amin" are directly inspired by his composition.
The veteran artist expressed concern over the apparent lack of respect for copyright and originality among Nigerian musicians, particularly within the gospel genre.
His claims quickly ignited discussions online, eliciting varied responses from users.
One user contested the accusation, arguing that creativity in music and literature often builds upon existing works, highlighting the notion of intertextuality and asserting that all melodies are influenced by earlier sounds.
Another commenter noted that he perceived similarities in melody when he initially listened to BBO's "Amin."
Additional users defended Ayefele and BBO, suggesting that artists often derive inspiration from what they hear, and that similarities between songs do not automatically imply intentional copying.
One participant in the discussion pointed out that BBO had previously mentioned drawing inspiration for "Amin" during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) period, long before the current controversy arose.
