A Federal High Court located in Abuja has mandated the issuance of a bench warrant for the capture of five individuals connected to the infamous terrorist figure, Bello Turji.
On Wednesday, Justice Emeka Nwite made this ruling after David Kaswe, the attorney representing the federal government, presented an oral request due to the defendants' failure to appear for their trial.
The individuals named are Musa Kamarawa, Abubakar Hashimu, alias Doctor; Samuel Chinedu; and Lucky Chukwuma.
Previously, Justice Nwite inquired about the defendants' whereabouts from their attorney, A.M. Lukman, who claimed that Kamarawa had assured him they would attend court, expressing his astonishment at their absence.
Consequently, the judge concurred with Kaswe’s proposal to issue a bench warrant for the apprehension of the defendants regardless of their location.
The federal government had submitted these charges on December 16, 2024, through the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation against the defendants, along with Bello Turji, Aminu Muhammad, and Sani Lawal, who are reportedly evading arrest.
The charges allege that the suspects provided various forms of material support to terrorist organizations led by Turji, Kachalla Halilu, Danbokolo, Lawali, Atarwatse, Buderi, and others.
They are accused of supplying illicit substances, such as penta injections and cannabis, as well as food items, military and police uniforms, camouflage gear, boots, and building materials to these terrorist factions.
Additionally, the suspects are said to have delivered cement, roofing zinc, bags of nails, and M.M. iron rods to operational bases in the forests of Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kaduna states.
This offense is alleged to contravene Section 17 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act of 2013, which prescribes penalties under the same statute.
The continuation of the trial has been scheduled for February 24.
