Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has terminated the employment of his Chief of Staff, Ziv Agmon, in response to significant public condemnation stemming from leaked remarks. Agmon reportedly used offensive language towards Jews of Moroccan heritage and also voiced criticism concerning members of the ruling Likud party and members of the prime minister's immediate family.
Netanyahu's office confirmed Agmon's departure, stating that he will vacate his role in the coming days, coinciding with the assumption of duties by his successor, Ido Norden.
The decision to dismiss Agmon represents a shift in stance, as the Prime Minister had previously expressed a desire for Agmon to continue in his position to ensure "stability and continuity."
However, the selection of Norden as the new appointee has also attracted controversy. Reports indicate that Norden has been associated with the operation of unofficial social media accounts used to promote his book, which explores the concept of a "deep state." In this book, Norden posits that Israel's inability to prevent the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, was due to clandestine institutional factors.
Norden's appointment is pending a security vetting process by Shin Bet, Israel's domestic security service. A professional lawyer and economist, Norden is also recognized for leading a right-leaning think tank that advocates for a stronger emphasis on ideological diversity within Israel's public sector.
This recent development exacerbates existing internal pressures within Netanyahu's administration, which has been subject to multiple controversies in recent months. Noteworthy among these is the situation involving Tzachi Braverman, a close associate of the prime minister, who has reportedly been interviewed by police concerning allegations of influencing a leak investigation related to the Gaza conflict.
Furthermore, the prime minister's inner circle has been under scrutiny in connection with the "Qatargate" affair, which involves claims that former aides received financial support from Qatar to sway public opinion during the ongoing conflict.
The latest dismissal underscores the persistent instability within Netanyahu's government as it navigates considerable political and public pressures.
