US Congressman Tony Gonzales is reportedly facing new accusations of inappropriate conduct, stemming from allegations that he sent explicit messages to a former campaign staffer.
According to a recent report, text messages exchanged in June 2020 allegedly depict the congressman making persistent requests for nude photographs from his campaign’s then-political director, alongside s3xually explicit comments.
The unnamed former staffer detailed that the messages included inquiries about her attire and repeated demands for explicit content, even after she declined. She stated that these exchanges caused her discomfort. The staffer did not leave her position immediately but departed the team after Gonzales assumed office in January 2021.
The report indicates that hundreds of messages were examined and identified as originating from the congressman's phone. The staffer clarified that no physical intimacy occurred between them, stating, "We didn’t so much as touch."
She further explained her decision to come forward publicly after the death of another former associate, Regina Santos-Aviles, who had previously been involved with Gonzales. Santos-Aviles reportedly died by suic!de last year. The former staffer claims that Gonzales had similarly pursued her.
Gonzales has admitted to his past relationship with Santos-Aviles, characterizing it as a "mistake" and a "lapse in judgment." In light of the controversy, he has withdrawn from his bid for re-election. Meanwhile, a congressional ethics committee has initiated an inquiry to ascertain whether his actions contravened official conduct regulations.
