In Makurdi, Benue State, a man accused of torturing a young girl believed to be his domestic worker has been physically assaulted by an irate group of residents. The incident came to light through a Facebook post by human rights activist Zege Orkwande on Friday, April 3, 2026.
According to Orkwande, the suspect is also accused of assaulting his wife when she raised concerns about his alleged mistreatment of the housemaid. The activist reported that the girl was brought from Konshisha Local Government Area and was not well, subjected to heavy workloads and frequent abuse.
Orkwande stated that he has transferred the man to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and potential prosecution.
"This evening again, I received a call from the Leader of Catholic Youth Center regarding a case of child torture," Orkwande stated in his post.
"The individual shown in the photograph brought the girl from the village (Konshisha LGA). She appears to be in poor health. I will refrain from detailing the extent of her duties.
"He subjected her to torture whenever possible. He also assaulted his wife if she objected to his behaviour.
"Today, his actions caught up with him. Local youths witnessed his behaviour and contacted me. He received a severe beating from the local men. I have taken him to the NAPTIP Nigeria, Benue Command. He is currently in custody."
Orkwande concluded by appealing for an end to child torture in Benue State, highlighting the significant trauma involved.
