Renowned American songwriter Billy Steinberg, famed for co-writing Madonna's popular track 'Like a Virgin', has passed away.
He died on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the age of 75.
According to the Los Angeles Times, his attorney, Laurie Soriano, confirmed that he succumbed to cancer after a prolonged battle.
His family released a statement expressing their grief, stating, "Billy Steinberg’s life was a testament to the enduring power of a well-written song — and to the idea that honesty, when set to music, can outlive us all."
Originating from Palm Springs, California, Steinberg forged a remarkable career during the 1980s and 1990s, crafting pop classics for some of the world’s biggest stars, including Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, and Celine Dion.
He co-penned five songs that soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, with 'Like a Virgin' being among them, co-written alongside Tom Kelly.
In 1997, Steinberg was awarded a Grammy for his work related to Celine Dion’s album 'Falling Into You', and in 2011, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife, Trina, their two sons, and two stepchildren.
