Bingham University in Karu, Nasarawa State has announced the promotion of Dr. Desmond Okocha to full professor of journalism and emerging media.
His advancement, which has been met with widespread acclaim among colleagues, represents a significant advancement in the university’s academic landscape.
The Governing Council of the university reached this decision during its 72nd regular meeting on March 12, 2026, with the promotion set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
The elevation was formally communicated by the university's Registrar, Daburi Misal, in a signed official letter.
Dr. Okocha is a highly regarded academic and media specialist, currently occupying the position of Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at Bingham University.
Known as a “scholar-practitioner,” he has established a strong reputation for melding theoretical research with practical applications in the fields of communication and digital media.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Okocha has also made significant contributions in public service, including his role as Special Adviser on Digital Media and Strategic Communication to the Governor of Abia State from 2020 to 2023.
His expertise has been sought by various international organizations, including the World Bank, the Global Fund for Women, and the Open Society Initiative for West Africa.
Moreover, Dr. Okocha has established connections within the global academic community as a Research Fellow at the University of Religions and Denominations and as a member of the International Panel on the Information Environment based in Switzerland.
With over 80 academic publications to his name, Okocha earned his PhD in Mass Communication from NIMS University in India.
His research interests include digital journalism, automated journalism, development communication, media ecology, and digital activism.
He is the founder and chairman of the Institute for Leadership and Development Communication, where he advocates for the use of communication as a medium for promoting governance, social justice, and community development.
Academically, he is recognized for pioneering the concept of digital mediated development (DMD), a framework that investigates how artificial intelligence and digital platforms can enhance transparency and democratic participation in developing countries.
