A fire broke out early on Tuesday, devastating the medical laboratory section of the Plateau State College of Health Technology in Zawan, situated within the Jos South Local Government Area of the state.
Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze completely consumed the laboratory, leaving it in ruins.
The college's Provost, Atangs Ishaku, confirmed the incident to reporters in Jos on Tuesday, stating, "Yes, it is true, but we do not know the cause yet. We are still assessing the situation."
Ishaku explained that he was made aware of the fire around midnight on Tuesday and promptly contacted the fire service.
"I initially reached out to the Federal Fire Service, but they informed me that their vehicle was not operational. Subsequently, I called another fire service, which did respond; however, by the time they arrived, the fire had already inflicted significant damage," he stated.
A correspondent who visited the scene noted that the incident left many students distraught, with numerous individuals lamenting the destruction of essential equipment and learning materials.
Mathew Gyang, a student, expressed, "This is a considerable loss for us. We've lost valuable apparatus and resources critical to our studies."
Another student, Sarah John, voiced her worries about the aftermath of the event.
"It’s truly disheartening. We are uncertain how we will manage after the destruction of our laboratory facilities. The college must act swiftly to resolve this situation," she said.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and officials are still working to assess the full extent of the damage.
Attempts to contact the spokesperson for the Federal Fire Service in the state, Ikibe Nanya Dul, for further comments were unsuccessful as her phone was unavailable at the time of this report.
