BMW has announced a recall involving nearly 180,000 cars in China due to a potential fire hazard associated with defective air conditioning wiring.
The recall impacts 133,849 locally manufactured 5 Series vehicles that were produced between December 2023 and April 2025, as reported by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
Additionally, the recall includes 45,678 imported vehicles, which encompass the 5 Series, 7 Series, and M5 models manufactured from June 2022 to April 2025.
According to the regulator, the affected vehicles feature a wiring harness for the front cabin air conditioning that may sustain damage due to improper wiring during the replacement of the air filter. In certain instances, this could lead to a short circuit, which presents a fire risk.
BMW has affirmed that it will carry out inspections and rectify the fault by ensuring the wiring harness is secured in the impacted vehicles, without any charge to customers. The recall is effective immediately as regulatory authorities seek to avert potential safety-related incidents associated with this defect.
