The British Council has urged Nigerian alumni from institutions in the United Kingdom to take advantage of their skills in advancing the future of Nigeria- UK relations, particularly by fostering economic growth, supporting democratic frameworks, encouraging technological innovation, and addressing global challenges that impact everyone.

Speaking at the Nigeria–UK Alumni Symposium held in Abuja on Sunday, which was themed 'The Role of UK Alumni in Shaping Nigeria–UK Relations', British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Lever, emphasized the importance of these contributions amid rapid economic changes and complex global issues.

During her address focusing on 'Catalysts of Influence: Driving Global Innovation and Social Change', Lever highlighted that in current times, true global influence extends beyond economic power; it encompasses human resources, collaborative ideas, and shared values.

She reaffirmed that for numerous years, the UK has served as a prime destination for Nigeria’s top talents. The impact of international education has been notably realized through programs like the Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships, alongside the many Nigerians who have independently pursued their studies in the UK.

"As graduates of UK institutions, you embody the essence of this soft power. By utilizing the knowledge you've acquired in the UK to promote agricultural reform, enhancing your international networks to scale Nigerian tech startups, or advocating for justice and social inclusion, you contribute to strengthening the bonds between our countries," Lever stated.

"You translate the personal goodwill fostered from your educational experiences into meaningful collective impacts. You are the dynamic bridge linking the UK and Nigeria, converting shared global insights into focused local actions.

"These scholarship programs are not merely about earning a degree; they aim to broaden horizons, challenge perceptions, and cultivate a long-lasting network of global leaders. The benefits of these initiatives can be seen daily throughout Nigeria."

Isaiah Bozimo, the keynote speaker and Founder of Detail Dispute Lawyers, resonated with Lever’s sentiments, asserting that the effectiveness of an alumni network should primarily be gauged not by the achievements of its members, but by the influence they facilitate for others.

He pointed out that alumni possess qualifications, experience, access, and credibility, which are of immense value, stressing that their true significance lies in what they can achieve for individuals, institutions, and the nation as a whole.

"Indeed, that represents a more challenging evaluation. Nevertheless, it is the appropriate one. We gather here as individuals who have studied, worked, and led initiatives across various borders.

"Leadership among alumni ought to depend on contributions. In a time like this, these contributions need to be serious, disciplined, and visibly demonstrate what we establish, the opportunities we create, and the systems we enhance. This is the genuine essence of alumni leadership in a transitioning world.

"Alumni leadership is marked by disciplined, publicly-minded actions that redirect education, access, and credibility into outcomes that enrich lives beyond one's own immediate community. This definition demands more from us than mere status or success."
