The British Council has acknowledged notable Nigerians who are harnessing their UK education to foster innovation and social progress in multiple sectors.
On Tuesday, the 2026 Study UK alumni awards took place in Lagos, uniting key figures from government, academia, and industry along with distinguished alumni recognized for their significant contributions, which illustrate the lasting benefit of UK higher education and its role in Nigeria’s advancement.
The awards celebrated accomplishments across four distinct categories.
In the Social Action category, Kola Alapinni, an international human rights lawyer, was honored for his advocacy promoting freedom of religion and belief in Nigeria. His legal efforts in prominent blasphemy cases in Kano have resulted in overturned convictions upon appeal, and he continues to challenge the legality of such laws.
Yemisi Sophie Odusanya, known popularly as Sisi Yemmie, received recognition in the Culture, Creativity and Sport category for her impact on digital storytelling and food media. Through her YouTube channel, she has cultivated a vast international audience by showcasing Nigerian cuisine and culture, enhancing the country’s cultural representation.
Dimeji Sofowora, co-founder of Helium Health, was acknowledged in the Business and Innovation category for his role in advancing healthcare technology throughout Africa.
His organization has successfully digitized millions of patient records and has provided financial support to healthcare providers, thereby enhancing service delivery across the sector.
In the Science and Sustainability category, recognition was given to Professor Abdulazeez Ahmed from Bayero University Kano for his contributions to hearing healthcare. He has spearheaded landmark initiatives in audiology training and workforce development, significantly increasing access to ear and hearing care in under-resourced communities.
The ceremony also served as a vital forum for discussion and networking, strengthening professional ties while underscoring the importance of international education in tackling local and global challenges.
During her address at the event, British Council Country Director in Nigeria, Donna McGowan, described the awards as an esteemed global platform that celebrates UK alumni achievements.
"This initiative, now in its 12th year, has received over 1,800 applications from alumni across more than 120 countries, representing over 110 UK universities, highlighting the extensive reach of UK education,” she stated.
She emphasized that the collaboration between the UK and Nigeria continues to bolster research, innovation, and skills development, while alumni networks are crucial in promoting international partnerships.
