Russia has expelled a diplomat from the United Kingdom due to allegations of espionage, leading the UK government to label the decision as completely unfounded.

The expulsion signals another escalation in the strained diplomatic relationship between Moscow and London. The Federal Security Service (FSB) has accused the diplomat of submitting misleading information when entering Russia and seeking sensitive information during informal economic discussions. This move has resulted in the revocation of the diplomat's accreditation, ordering them to leave the country within two weeks.

In response, a spokesman from the UK's Foreign Office dismissed these allegations as "complete nonsense," describing Russia's actions as part of an "organized campaign of harassment against British diplomats." The statement emphasized the UK's commitment to protecting its diplomats and their families from intimidation.

According to reports from the Russian state news agency Tass, the FSB indicated that the accused diplomat "deliberately provided false information" while applying for entry into Russia and suggested that evidence of espionage activities had been detected.

After the expulsion announcement, Danae Dholakia, the UK's charge d'affaires, was called into the Russian Foreign Ministry but left without making any comments.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of mutual expulsions between Russia and the UK, which have intensified following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Earlier in the year, a British diplomat was expelled over similar espionage claims, while two British officials were also sent out in March 2025. In retaliation, the UK had revoked the accreditation of a Russian diplomat and their family, citing a zero-tolerance policy for intimidation against its personnel.

The cycle of expulsions exemplifies the deteriorating state of UK-Russia relations and highlights the increasing difficulty of diplomatic communications between the two countries.
