American pop star Britney Spears has been taken into custody in California on suspicion of driving under the influence.
As per records from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, Spears, aged 44, was arrested on the evening of Wednesday, March 4. She was subsequently released early the following morning, on March 5.
Spears was booked by the sheriff’s office around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, and she was released a few hours later.
During her arrest, the singer was handcuffed and taken into custody before being processed and later released.
The pop star is set to appear in court on May 4.
This incident follows recent reports indicating that Spears had obtained a restraining order against a man from Louisiana who has allegedly harassed her since 2013.
This latest arrest is not Spears’ first entanglement with law enforcement; she had a previous arrest in 2007 related to an alleged hit-and-run with a parked vehicle in Los Angeles. Those charges were eventually dismissed after she compensated the vehicle's owner.
In early 2024, the singer announced her decision to step back from the music scene after gaining financial autonomy from a restrictive conservatorship managed by her father.
Additionally, just last month, it was reported that Spears sold the rights to her entire music catalogue to the independent music publisher Primary Wave for approximately $200 million (£146 million) on December 30.
