Britney Spears has reportedly entered into an agreement that involves the sale of her music catalog, with the transaction valued at approximately $200 million, as per reports from US media outlets.
This deal encompasses popular tracks like "...Baby One More Time" and "Oops!… I Did It Again," which significantly shaped the pop music landscape of the late 1990s and early 2000s. TMZ, a celebrity news source, noted that while the deal's financial specifics were not disclosed in the legal filings, the estimated amount has been widely circulated.
The reported sum places Spears' transaction in a similar bracket as Justin Bieber's catalog sale earlier in 2023. At 44 years old, Spears joins an increasing number of prominent artists who have opted to monetize their music rights in recent years, following names like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Shakira, and KISS.
US media has indicated that the rights have been acquired by Primary Wave, a music publishing company that already owns works from legendary artists such as Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, and Prince.
Owning publishing rights allows the holders to earn royalties whenever the songs are streamed, played on the airwaves, sold, or featured in films and advertising campaigns. This growing market for music rights has captured the attention of investors during the streaming era, presenting opportunities for long-term revenue.
Major record labels like Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group have been intensifying their involvement in acquiring music catalogs, alongside specialized firms like Recognition Music Group and Concord Music Publishing.
Britney Spears catapulted to international stardom in the late 1990s but has distanced herself from the music scene in recent years. In 2021, a US court dissolved a 13-year conservatorship that had given her father dominion over her financial decisions, an arrangement that she has publicly labeled as abusive.
