Papi, a user on X, disclosed that during the burial of Hillary Ikechukwu Emereole, a 23-year-old gay Nigerian, his relatives engaged in song and celebration of his death.
Hillary was interred in his hometown of Umuihugba Umuodu Autonomous community, located in Owerri, Imo State, on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
According to reports, Hillary lost his life after being reportedly pushed from a two-storey building by men motivated by homophobic sentiments in Port Harcourt.
Papi noted that at the burial, Hillary's relatives expressed their joy over his murder, chanting about how they were happy he had died due to his sexual orientation.
In a heart-wrenching statement, he remarked, "Hillary was laid to rest over the weekend, and it really hurt me because his kinsmen were informed that he was killed for being homosexual. They sang joyfully about how glad they were that he had died because of his sexuality. It was truly disheartening to witness this political climate."
The incident highlights ongoing issues regarding the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria and ignites further discussions surrounding societal attitudes towards homosexuality.
