The Federal High Court in Calabar has imposed a 17-year prison sentence on 28-year-old Gift Effiong for her involvement in human trafficking and the sale of two newborn infants for a total of 1.3 million naira.
This ruling followed the efforts of the Cross River Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which brought the case against Effiong in suit number FHC/CA/295C/2025.
Effiong was initially charged on November 26, 2025, facing five counts related to human trafficking and the sale of infants, violating Sections 21, 27, and 13(2)(b) of the Trafficking in Persons Act. She pleaded guilty to all charges.
During the sentencing, Justice Rosemary Oghoghorie urged NAPTIP agents to initiate rescue operations for the trafficked infants.
In her judgment, the judge sentenced Effiong to five years for the first count, followed by an additional two and a half years for the second count. For the third count, she received a two-year sentence and a fine of 250,000 naira.
Furthermore, she was given two and a half years and five years on the fourth and fifth counts, along with fines of two million naira.
Justice Oghoghorie stipulated that all sentences would be served concurrently, resulting in a cumulative term of 17 years in prison.
