A Catholic priest has died unexpectedly after collapsing in front of the congregation during a Sunday Mass.

This unfortunate event occurred last Sunday, February 1, in Wiesmath, situated in the Wiener Neustadt district of Austria.

According to a statement from the Archdiocese of Vienna, the 59-year-old priest, Raimund Beisteiner, fell to the ground as he was on his way to return the Holy Communion host to the tabernacle after administering it to the parishioners.

"Despite receiving immediate professional help, he died in the church," the statement confirmed.

The mayor of Wiesmath, Erich Rasner, was also present during the Mass and witnessed the heart-wrenching moments unfold.

The community in Wiesmath is deeply shocked by the passing of their beloved priest. Beisteiner had played a significant role in the spiritual guidance of the parish for nearly twenty years and was well respected beyond the local community.

Rasner remembered him as an "extremely conscientious and sensitive priest" and expressed his personal sorrow over the loss, highlighting the friendship that had developed over many years.

In honor of the deceased priest, a prayer service was organized at short notice, which saw attendance from numerous priests in the deanery, alongside Archbishop Josef Grunwidl.

The funeral for parish moderator Raimund Beisteiner is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the parish church in Wiesmath, beginning with the rosary at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Requiem Mass at 10 a.m.
