German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has concluded his first official trip to China, characterizing his discussions with President Xi Jinping and the Chinese Premier as fruitful, while also underscoring the existence of crucial economic challenges that need to be managed.
During his remarks in Hangzhou at the end of his visit, Merz raised alarms about the issue of excessive industrial capacity in China. "Primarily, there are concerns regarding competition; China's high production levels have resulted in some difficulties for Europe, as they far surpass market demand," he stated.
Merz indicated that thorough discussions would continue upon his return to Germany and announced plans to send Economy Minister Katherina Reiche to China for follow-up discussions on the matters at hand.
Officials noted that the aim of the discussions was to find a balance between trading opportunities and ensuring fair competition and market stability for both nations.
This visit marks Merz's first trip to China as Chancellor and reflects Germany’s commitment to preserving strong economic relationships while navigating the structural imbalances impacting European markets.
