On February 15, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched an attack on Debiro Community, located in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, leading to significant property damage.
Residents reported that roughly forty attackers arrived on sixteen motorcycles, disguised as local vigilantes. Their intention was reportedly to gather the community members who had fled into the surrounding bush out of fear. Once they had driven the residents away, the attackers proceeded to wreak havoc across the area, destroying every property in their path.
Fortunately, no lives were claimed during this violent incident. However, the attackers set ablaze a church, approximately twenty-five houses, food supplies, and any vehicles present in the community.
A local resident recounted the harrowing experience: "After a successful harvest, almost all have not transported their food items to Biu, thinking peace has returned, until suddenly this attack of last Sunday. They came in disguise, wearing vigilantes’ uniforms, and they wanted to gather people who ran into the bush before launching an attack. Looking at the rocky nature of our community, they could not pursue us with their motorcycles."
Debiro is primarily an agricultural community, situated about forty-eight kilometers from Biu, which serves as the headquarters of the Biu Local Government Area.
In recent weeks, insurgent activities in the area have been alarming, with earlier attacks on the Harang and Tarfa communities resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including a pastor. The poor condition of the roads frequently hampers military responses, making it challenging to provide timely assistance during such attacks.
