Nigerian Army's 2 Brigade stationed in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, encountered a violent clash with local youths following the apprehension of an individual suspected of stealing diesel from Sterling Petroleum and Fertiliser Limited.
Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at 2 Brigade, stated that the altercation began when youths attempted to intervene and free the suspect who was being escorted to the company's facility for questioning.
As the youths obstructed the road and their attempts to rescue the suspect fell short, they resorted to violence by throwing stones and bottles toward the soldiers.
In response, military personnel dispersed the aggressive crowd, resulting in a youth leader sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg, necessitating hospital treatment.
Following the altercation, the situation deteriorated, with youths allegedly vandalizing vehicles, harassing passersby, and attacking company transport vehicles along the route.
Reinforcements were dispatched to restore order and secure the area effectively.
In a subsequent operation, security forces discovered an unidentified body near a coffin. The deceased was transported to a morgue with assistance from the police and military.
The Army has confirmed that operations are ongoing to safeguard public safety and the assets of the company involved.
