A magistrates' court has postponed the trial of the driver linked to the accident involving Anthony Joshua, as the prosecution seeks legal guidance from the Ogun State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).
On Wednesday, the driver Kayode appeared in court facing allegations of reckless driving. Prosecutor Kadiri informed the court that the case file had been sent to the Ogun DPP for assessment.
Earlier, on January 20, Richard Nigiwe, representing the police, requested the adjournment to allow for the duplication of the case file and its subsequent transmission to the state attorney-general via the DPP for further legal advice. Olalekan Abiodun, the defence attorney, contested this request, highlighting that three witnesses were present in court and urging for the trial to proceed.
Nonetheless, Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun ruled in favor of the prosecution, ordering that the trial be rescheduled for March 17 and that the case documentation be duplicated and sent to the Ogun attorney-general.
This incident unfolds in the aftermath of a tragic road collision that occurred on December 29, 2025, involving Joshua, a former world heavyweight boxing champion.
The incident involved an SUV carrying Joshua and two of his associates crashing into a stationary truck in the Sinoma area near Sagamu, Ogun State, while traveling from Lagos. While Joshua escaped with minor injuries, his two companions, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, sadly lost their lives.
Ghami had been Joshua's longtime friend as well as his strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer.
Following the accident, Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi on December 31, 2025, after receiving treatment for his injuries sustained during the crash.
