A collaborative operation conducted by the Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) alongside the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has resulted in the confiscation of a significant quantity of illegal drugs that were concealed in an imported vehicle at the Lagos Port.
The operation took place on Tuesday, following intelligence reports indicating the potential smuggling of drugs into the nation.
Authorities discovered 347.5 kilograms of 'Canadian Loud,' a highly potent form of cannabis, carefully hidden in 13 bags within a Toyota Sienna vehicle.
The Customs officials assessed the street value of the seized drugs to be in the billions of naira.
Chief Superintendent Isah Sulaiman, the Public Relations Officer for the Apapa Port Command, stated that this seizure occurred less than 24 hours after the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, was awarded a World Customs Organisation (WCO) Certificate of Merit.
Sulaiman further mentioned that the drugs were concealed in one of four vehicles contained within a single import shipment.
“The total weight was verified, comprising 10 bags weighing 25 kilograms each, one bag at 29 kilograms, and two bags weighing 34.5 kilograms and 34 kilograms respectively, summing up to 347.5 kilograms,” Sulaiman confirmed.
He added that this incident marks the fourth substantial interception of drugs by the NCS and NDLEA at Apapa Port in less than two months, emphasizing Comptroller Oshoba's determination that every cargo - whether for import or export - will undergo meticulous scrutiny.
Reacting to the discovery, Comptroller Oshoba issued a stern warning to criminal elements attempting to utilize the port for trafficking purposes.
“Any effort to smuggle prohibited items through Apapa Port will be detected and stopped. We remain vigilant and steadfast in our responsibility to safeguard our community and national security,” Oshoba stated.
