Sources from the neighbourhood indicated that the violence involved suspected members of the Doggies and White Eagles factions of the Deybam cult. These groups were allegedly competing for both control of territory and the affection of a young woman in the vicinity.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the situation escalated rapidly, culminating in the fatal shooting of a member from one of the rival factions. The deceased had reportedly gone to a local shop to buy bread when assailants arrived in a vehicle and opened fire on him.

The shooting caused widespread panic, prompting residents and bystanders to seek safety.

Police officers from the Mile 1 Division responded to the scene and subsequently removed the body after the attackers had fled.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that authorities have launched a pursuit of the individuals responsible for the killing. She identified the motive as an internal conflict among cult members in Diobu.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators with a view to bringing them to justice. Security has been reinforced in the area as investigation continues,” CSP Iringe-Koko added.
