A fatal incident took place in Lagos on Monday when a truck collided with a cyclist in Ikeja, prompting dramatic scenes as the truck driver allegedly tried to escape.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred on Monday morning close to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). They indicated that the truck, moving at high speed, reportedly aimed to beat a traffic light when it crashed into the cyclist.
"The truck driver was driving very fast and did not decelerate even as the traffic light turned yellow before hitting the cyclist," said an unnamed official from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
"He attempted to flee, but quick-thinking bystanders flagged down the truck to prevent him from escaping."
The cyclist, whose name has not yet been disclosed, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, confirmed the incident, stating that the accident occurred beneath the LASUTH Bridge at the traffic light intersection towards Airport Road, Ikeja.
Giwa revealed that the involved vehicle was a DAF articulated truck and that the accident involved an unsuspecting cyclist.
Initial investigations suggested that the accident happened when both the truck and cyclist, traveling from the Maryland direction, attempted to navigate the roundabout beneath the bridge simultaneously.
"During this convergence under the bridge, the cyclist failed to keep a safe distance from the moving truck. The situation escalated rapidly, leading to the cyclist being struck and suffering fatal injuries instantly," he explained.
LASTMA officials, who were present to manage traffic, acted quickly, leading to the arrest of the driver who tried to avoid responsibility by leaving the scene.
The suspect was subsequently transferred to the Ikeja Police Division for thorough investigation and possible prosecution according to law.
To mitigate further accidents and restore traffic flow, officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) were swiftly dispatched to clear the remains of the deceased cyclist from the roadway, prioritizing safety and order in the area,” he added.
The governor’s aide expressed profound sadness regarding the incident and the irreplaceable loss of life while offering condolences to the victim's family.
