Dangote Cement Plc has officially launched its Safety FairPlay Initiative at the Ibese Plant located in Ogun State, aimed at promoting a strong safety culture within its workforce.

The initiative is set to be implemented at all Dangote Cement facilities across the country, marking an important step in the company’s mission to enhance safety standards and encourage responsible workplace behaviors.

According to a statement from the company, the pilot launch at the Ibese Plant saw enthusiastic participation from both management and staff, reflecting a collective commitment to improving health and safety practices in the workplace.

"The Safety FairPlay Initiative is structured to induce lasting behavioral and cultural changes through a fair and transparent framework that advocates for safe behavior," the statement explained.

The initiative is based on three foundational pillars: Recognition, Correction (Coaching), and Discipline. These pillars focus on acknowledging positive safety actions, maintaining consistency in addressing risky behaviors, and promoting a culture of open reporting of incidents and near-misses.

At the launch event, Mr. Anandam Duraisamy, Technical Director of Dangote Cement Plc, highlighted the initiative's strategic role in the business and encouraged employees to embrace a safety culture rooted in fairness, accountability, and continuous improvement.

He remarked, "The Safety FairPlay signifies a pivotal moment in our journey to establishing a workplace where safety transcends mere policy, transforming into a collective mindset and everyday practice that illustrates our identity and approach to work."

Duraisamy elaborated, saying, "The Safety FairPlay is about fostering trust, consistency, and accountability in our safety management. When individuals realize that safe behaviors are rewarded, and that risky conduct is fairly addressed, safety becomes a shared responsibility and an integral part of our organizational culture."

He further emphasized that the initiative prioritizes people over procedures and compliance, stating that authentic safety excellence starts with individual attitudes, decisions, and the commitment to look out for one another.

"Every incident avoided, risk identified, and safe choice made contributes to the strength of our organization. This strength derives from each employee recognizing safety as a personal and collective obligation," he concluded.

Mr. Elvis Akalusi, the Head of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at the Ibese Plant, commended the management for spearheading the program and praised the workforce for their proactive engagement with the initiative.

Akalusi confirmed that the Safety FairPlay Initiative would be seamlessly integrated into daily operations at the plant, with support from all department heads.

"This initiative will provide essential tools, coaching, recognition, and accountability, which are vital for making safer choices. Its success relies on our collective commitment and our resolve to consistently do what is right, even when unsupervised," Akalusi noted.

He urged staff to approach the program with open minds, stating, "Let us foster a culture where voicing concerns is welcomed, continuous learning is encouraged, and mistakes are opportunities for growth, not sources of fear."
