Authorities in Delta State have apprehended more individuals believed to be involved in the violent death of Alex Adanike, a 31-year-old resident of Agbhara-Otor. The incident, which occurred on January 20, 2026, saw Adanike fatally attacked with a firearm and a stabbing weapon by assailants suspected to be members of cult groups.
This latest development follows an earlier announcement in January, where eight suspects were taken into custody concerning the homicide. The Delta State Police Command, through its spokesperson Bright Edafe, confirmed that the victim was mistakenly identified as his twin brother, highlighting the severe repercussions of cultism in the region.
Edafe revealed that initial police efforts led to the apprehension of two suspects who subsequently confessed to their participation in the killing. In a significant breakthrough, a recent coordinated operation by the police across Ughelli and Warri, spearheaded by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, resulted in the arrest of two more suspects.
These newly apprehended individuals are reportedly affiliated with the same gang as those already detained and have also admitted to being involved in Adanike's death. All four suspects implicated in the case were presented before the Ughelli High Court on March 31 and have since been remanded in prison custody.
The mistaken identity aspect of this murder has amplified concerns among residents regarding the prevalence of random violence and the potential danger to unsuspecting civilians. However, the police have reiterated their commitment to combating criminal activities across the state.
According to Edafe, the police force's strategy of proactive measures, including targeted raids, stop-and-search operations, and intelligence gathering, is crucial for both apprehending perpetrators and preventing future criminal acts. The Command praised its officers for their efforts in confronting criminal elements in their hideouts, emphasizing that sustained pressure will render the state increasingly inhospitable for criminals. Citizens are urged to comply with the law and collaborate with security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property.
