The Delta State Police Command has reported the arrest of an individual for the illegal possession of a firearm. According to SP Bright Edafe, the command's spokesperson, the suspect, Igbunu Evans, reportedly procured a Beretta pistol through social media channels.
During a briefing on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Edafe displayed the recovered weapon, which included a magazine and two 9mm rounds. He cautioned against the increasing prevalence of illegal arms procurement, emphasizing that such firearms are exclusively designated for authorised security agencies.
Upon interrogation, Evans admitted to ordering the firearm through Snapchat from a vendor, paying N450,000 for its delivery. He claimed the weapon was intended for self-protection against potential threats from unknown gunmen or kidnappers.
Furthermore, the suspect revealed his involvement in internet fraud for the past three to four years.
Edafe linked the incident to a broader spectrum of criminal activities, noting that internet fraud, cultism, substance abuse, and now illegal gun possession indicate a pattern where criminal actions often lead to others.
He reiterated that possessing prohibited firearms like the Beretta pistol is unlawful for civilians, irrespective of perceived security needs. Such weapons are strictly for government security operatives.
The suspect is currently in police custody and will face legal charges.
