The Delta State Government on Sunday received 16-year-old cyclist Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, who has autism, during a brief stopover in Asaba as part of his impressive endurance journey.
Accompanied by his parents, members of the Kanyeyachukwu Autism Foundation, cycling officials, and medical personnel, Kanyeyachukwu, who hails from Enugu State, is riding from Enugu through Anambra, aiming to reach Lagos eventually.
At the Government House, Kanyeyachukwu and his team were welcomed by the First Lady of Delta State, Tobore Oborevwori.
Also present were notable figures including the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Kingsley Emu, Delta State House of Assembly representative Bridget Anyafulu, and the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Pat Ajudua.
During the visit, Mrs. Oborevwori remarked that Kanyeyachukwu’s journey is both “inspiring” and “symbolic,” praising his determination and bravery. She highlighted that his initiative, dubbed “Ride with Kanye,” aims to increase autism awareness.
The First Lady added that Kanyeyachukwu’s achievements, particularly his recognition in the Guinness World Record, showcase his artistic talents and his ardent passion for cycling.
She emphasized the alignment of this visit with her “You Matter Charity Foundation,” which advocates for inclusion and underscores the values of each individual.
Kanyeyachukwu's story, she noted, is a testament to the potential to inspire and create a positive impact in society. The foundation is set to support him in future endeavors, including his pursuit of additional accolades with hopes of further Guinness World Records achievements.
Mr. Emu elaborated on the significance of the You Matter Initiative, which supports individuals excelling in spite of their challenges, commending Kanyeyachukwu's parents for their unwavering support.
He reiterated the Delta State Government's commitment to backing campaigns aimed at raising awareness and advocating for social inclusion, referencing past long-distance cycling initiatives focused on cancer awareness.
Chuck Nduka-Eze, a patron of the Autism Foundation, praised Kanyeyachukwu’s accomplishments as highly motivational. He noted that Kanyeyachukwu’s ability to create the world’s largest artistic painting with family encouragement affirms the importance of support in achieving success.
The father of Kanyeyachukwu expressed gratitude to the Delta State Government and Mrs. Oborevwori for their gracious reception, describing her as compassionate and committed to supporting vulnerable groups.
A symbolic cheque of N10 million was presented to support Kanyeyachukwu's advocacy initiatives and ongoing journey, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
