Doja Cat has expressed her disapproval of comments made by actor Timothee Chalamet concerning opera and ballet, aligning herself with a growing number of advocates for these traditional art forms.
The hip-hop artist shared a video on TikTok in which she addressed the debate, highlighting that both opera and ballet have rich histories spanning centuries.
In her remarks, Doja Cat noted that opera boasts an existence of over 400 years, while ballet has a legacy of approximately 500 years. During the video, she humorously mispronounced Chalamet’s name before criticizing his what she deemed dismissive comments about these genres. Doja remarked that Chalamet “had the nerve” to assert that opera and ballet have fallen out of favor.
She maintained that contemporary performances still draw significant audiences, suggesting that a modern-day opera house would likely be filled with patrons. According to her, the silence observed during these performances stems from the audience's profound respect for what she described as “truly beautiful” art forms.
Furthermore, Doja Cat pointed out the rigorous physical challenges that ballet dancers face, emphasizing the pain and sacrifices that come with their dedication to this art. She remarked that while the classical arts sector may encounter some hardships, it does not imply that audiences have lost their enthusiasm.
Chalamet encountered backlash after stating during a CNN and Variety event on February 21 that he wouldn't wish to work in opera or ballet just to preserve their relevance, famously claiming that “no one cares about [opera or ballet] anymore.”
His comments triggered widespread reactions from cultural institutions, including a video shared by the Metropolitan Opera that showcased staff rehearsing for a performance, captioned: “This one's for you, Timothée Chalamet.”
