Don Lemon, the former CNN anchor, was taken into custody during an incident involving anti-ICE demonstrators who disrupted a church service in Minnesota.
The events occurred on January 18 when protestors entered Cities Church located in St. Paul, claiming that one of the pastors was the acting field director for the St. Paul ICE office.
Lemon's legal representative, Abbe Lowell, stated that Lemon was arrested by federal authorities on Thursday night while he was reporting on the Grammy Awards.
"Don has dedicated 30 years to journalism, and his activities in Minneapolis align with his standard reporting efforts," commented Lowell. "The First Amendment protects journalists whose duty it is to reveal the truth and hold those in authority accountable."
Lowell further criticized the Trump administration for prioritizing Lemon's case over the investigation of federal agents involved in the deaths of two peaceful protestors in Minnesota, labeling the arrest as a diversion from the numerous challenges facing the administration.
He described Lemon's arrest as an unprecedented assault on First Amendment rights and emphasized that the journalist will ardently contest the charges in court.
As of January 22, at least three individuals were reported arrested due to the protest.
Additionally, Lowell mentioned that a magistrate judge had dismissed the charges against Lemon at that time.
